WandaVision Spinoff Agatha All Along Unveils First Look at the 'Covenless' Witches (2024)

A new image has been released for Agatha All Along, Disney's sequel to WandaVision. The picture not only marks the first promotional image shared for the series, it also reveals a first look at the group of 'covenless' witches being led by Kathryn Hahn's Agatha Harkness.

In a new image shared by Empire, Hahn's Agatha Harkness can be seen leading a quartet of covenless witches. Described by creator Jac Schaeffer as a "disparate, mixed bag of witches", the group includes Patti LuPone’s Lilia, Sasheer Zamata’s Jennifer, Debra Jo Rupp’s Sharon (a character that coincidentally also appeared alongside Agatha in WandaVision), and Ali Ahn’s Alice.

“What they have in common is that they’re covenless witches,” Schaeffer said. “Witches are defined by deception, treachery, villainy, and selfishness. What do you do when you have a group of witches who [demonstrate] those notions and you need them to work together?" While specific details about these witches are scarce, it's clear that Schaeffer intends to present them as fully realized characters.

Teasing that the show would delve deeper into Agatha's characterization, Schaeffer also promised fans would see more of Agatha's human side. “[Where] WandaVision played with the form of classic TV sitcoms, [here] we do a lot of playing with what the assumptions about witches are,” Schaeffer stated. “Like, what are the shorthand visuals for witches? We certainly didn’t want a one-dimensional nasty witch. We will have moments where we see Agatha’s true heart.”

The Road to Agatha All Along

Hahn originally portrayed the character of Agatha Harkness in WandaVision, where it was revealed that she was manipulating the Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen) to steal her abilities. After her defeat, Wanda leaves Agatha trapped in Westview, brainwashed, powerless, and unaware of her true identity. Agatha (and Hahn's performance) stole fans' hearts, however, and a new series about the now-powerless villain was commissioned.

Originally titled Agatha: House of Harkness, the series was eventually retitled Agatha: Coven of Chaos, before being retitled once again as Agatha: Darkhold Diaries. Ultimately, the series is being marketed under the title Agatha All Along, a reference to Hahn's Emmy-winning, scene-stealing number from WandaVision. With its campy, overtly evil lyrics and sound, it's the perfect encapsulation of the Marvel Cinematic Universe's version of the character — making it a natural choice for the show's title.

The series was originally scheduled for release last year, but production delays (including reshoots and a creative re-evaluation at Marvel Studios) pushed its release date back to September 18, 2024, making it part of Marvel's Phase Five initiative. Much like WandaVision, Agatha All Along is expected to run for 9 episodes. In addition to the aforementioned witches, Joe Locke will also be portraying 'Billy', a teen boy who finds himself joining the coven. Aubrey Plaza rounds out the cast as the piece's villain — a witch named Rio Vidal who has a history with Agatha.
